Your Turn to Join Us

r-word.org

I've written a couple of blog posts before about the r-word (here and here).  We've dealt with it at school and on the school bus.  My boys have asked people to not say it out of respect for people with learning disabilities like their sister.  I know that some people think we are being overly sensitive about the subject.  I find it no different than terms that were used in the past as derogatory about other groups of people.  The n-word..."that's so gay"....I could add more but I think you get the point.  Maybe they were overly sensitive, but they asked for people to stop using them and for the most part, people listened.  Now why is it different when it is about people with learning disabilities?

Meriah writes about it here:  With a Little Moxie

New York Times article from Sunday

Please think about it.  If you are one of the people that still use this word, please take a stand tomorrow.  Stop using the word and encourage others to do the same.  You know the saying, "Sticks and stones my break my bones, but words can never hurt me."  We all know better.  Words do hurt!

Don't do it for me....do it for this little girl!
Help us make the future more accepting and welcoming for her!

Please take a minute to see others take on the r-word here as part of a blog hop.
