31 for 21: Day 26 Giving up control

Today was therapy day.  I've been getting a little frustrated with therapy.  Not the actual therapy or EI or our therapist...just in general.  I feel like we've hit a plateau.  I feel like Hailey is on the verge of getting things to click.  Hailey crosses midline, she likes to nibble on her toes, she bears weight on her legs, she jabbers, she likes to feed herself, she scoots backwards for now, she kneels, she gets up on all 4s (on her own and rocks back and forth).  She just hasn't mastered sitting unsupported.  She can tripod sit and support herself on her legs but she can't sit and play with a toy without face planting or tipping over.

It is just so frustrating.  I think it is because I can't control it and I don't want my little girl delayed.  I want to keep the gap between her and "typical" as small as I can for as long as I can.  If you haven't noticed already, I am type A, OCD, control-freak.  I laugh as I type that because I'm positive God laughed when he chose Hailey to be in our family.  He knew giving up control would be one of the hardest challenges for me!  Our therapist "L" keeps stressing how good Hailey is doing.  She is doing things that are generally after sitting, so it is just a matter of putting the puzzle pieces together.  Ughh....guess we keep practicing.

Here are a few pics from therapy and then a shot of Houdini after nap-time.

I'm sitting here...what do you want me to do?

Just give me the bottle...I can do it myself.

There goes the squinty eye thing again but I'm more interested in the fact that she went to bed with socks and pants.  Note they are no longer on her!

  1. This is a hard thing, probably too because she's largely been on track. But this is expected. And she's really only 8 months old (or is it 7?), which is really on the early end for babies with Ds to sit. And she will be doing it soon. It'll be easier if you relax. Especially because in the next few months she'll get to the age where you're more aware of where she is cognitively and worrying about those kinds of delays will just kill you. So what if there are a few gross motor delays! By the way, Cora's not kneeling, scooting or up on 4s yet. So babies definitely do things in different orders. But it is so so hard. I struggle with this too.

  2. I totally hear you on the frustrated thing. it seems like Madi will do some great things for awhile and then we have a month of no progress at all. I know that she is not sitting unsupported yet but she is doing some AMAZING things! I can't believe that she is only 8 months old and is kneeling and rocking back & forth on all fours! That's awesome! Madi will be 10 months on Friday and she is not doing those things. I know that it is easier said than done, but try and hang in there! I am sure in the next couple of weeks she all of a sudden be sitting unsupported like crazy!

  3. I could have written this myself...it's a tough job sitting back and waiting. When I'm at my wits end Ty always busts out a new skill though...every time! Oh, and that last picture cracks me up!!

  4. I have a love/hate relationship with all the therapies Russell recieves, so I get exactly what you are feeling!

And I also remember totally stressing with the sitting milestone...I must have wrote a billion posts on it..."Why isn't he doing it yet, when will he do it, I don't want him to fall further behind"

And in the end he did it when he was ready and its funny because as much as I worried and stressed over it, now, I cannot even remember how old he was when he did it!! I'm guessing around ten months??

    Hailey is doing awesome!

  5. I thought Nathan would never reach the sitting milestone. When he finally did, he hit another one three days later - crawling! Yes, you read that right - three days. He is 19 months now, and though I'd love for him to be walking independently, I know he'll do it in his own time.
